Veggerslev church / Veggerslev kirke, Djurs Nørre herred, Randers amt.

Veggerslev Church, ab. 7 km north of Grenå
Veggerslev sogn, Djurs Nørre herred, Randers amt

The church in Veggerslev has a Romanesque nave and choir with late Gothic additions, a tower to the west and a porch to the south. The Romanesque building is in granite ashlars and the walls are mostly re-walled with few original details preserved, fx a round arched window in the north side of the choir. In the south eastern corner of the nave is a picture ashlar with a male head. In late Gothic period the walls were heightened with monk bricks. In the choir is built a cross vault and in the nave two cross vaults. From the same period is the tall tower in re-used ashlars and monk bricks. The cross-vaulted bottom room of the tower opens to the nave in a pointed arch.

Picture ashlar with male head.

The communion table is in granite boulders and the frame of the altar piece has parts of a Renaissance joinery from ab. 1625-50. On the backside is a coat of arms with the initials NS SG 1658 and in another place the initials NS and the same year. The altar crucifix is in soft wood, probably an Italian work, given in 1855 by agent Nyholm. A parish clerk chair from the 1600s. A Romanesque granite font of Djursland-type with rope decorations. A Netherland baptismal bowl from ab. 1650 with two lions surrounding an empty shield. A pulpit in simple Renaissance, similar to the old sections of the altar piece. A church bell from 1861 by Gamst & Lund. The church was restored in 1962.
